Port Blair – the capital of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, sprawls around a harbour on the east coast of South Andaman.

Port Blair is named after Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company, who unsuccessfully attempted to establish a colony in 1789. It was re-established in 1858, as the site for a British penal colony. This was originally on Viper Island, named after Lieutenant Blair's vessel, The Viper.Between 1864 and 1867 a penal establishment was built with convict labor on the northern side of Ross Island. These structures are now in ruins. An enormous Cellular Jail, now a popular tourist site, was constructed between 1896 and 1906 to house Indian convicts, mostly political prisoners, in solitary confinement. It was famously known as "Kala Pani" translated as "Black Waters".

During 1943 and 1944, Port Blair was the headquarters of the Indian National Army government under Subhash Chandra Bose. Although damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Port Blair survived to act as a base for relief efforts in the islands.

The breath-taking beaches and fascinating marine ecology on the reefs along with the scope for water sports, bird watching and fishing, make Port Blair one of the most enchanting tourist destinations in India.

JEWEL OF THE INDIAN SEAS

0900 hrs Proceed for a full city tour of Port Blair. Among the highlights to be seen while touring is the visit to Samudrika Marine Museum, Anthropological Museum, to the Cellular Jail and Aberdeen Bazaar.

The Samudrika Marine Museum with its display of about 350 species of sea-life, rare varieties of coral, the museum reflects the enormous marine life and wealth submerged in the waters of these islands. The Anthropological Museum witness the tribal life of the islands with their model villages and the arte facts which showcases the four Negroid tribes of the Andamans, viz, the Jarawas, Sentinelese, Andamanese and the Onges, and two Mongloid tribes of the Nicobars, viz, the Nicobarese and the Shompens.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands are home to some of the oldest tribes in the world. Though most of these tribes have modernized, some of them that still exist in the ‘primitive’ stage are hostile to any outside interference.

The Cellular Jail is now dedicated to the nation as a National Memorial is a three-storeyed prison, constructed by the British in 1906, It is a pilgrim destination for freedom fighters. This colossal edifice has mutely witnessed the most treacherous of inhumane atrocities borne by the convicts who were mostly freedom fighters. It houses a spectacular sound and light show, besides a museum and art gallery. One can see small cellular cells where they could hold 698 solitary prisoners, the gallows, the death house and the different implements used by the British to torture the inmates.

At the end of the day drive to the lively Aberdeen Bazaar, which was once a famous trading market. Constructed entirely of wood, it has been razed to the ground several times in the past. However, every time, reconstruction was completed in no time and now it is as colorful as ever.
